HHP has a special focus on children’s homes and aims to prevent lead poisoning and reduce asthma triggers in the homes of high-risk populations, including low-income families and families of color. As such, HHP uses a proactive, comprehensive prevention approach targeted to these populations and strives to build partnerships with key organizations serving these communities with the goal of broadening the reach of our prevention efforts.

Mayoral Initiative

The Mayoral Initiative includes a range of measures aimed at reducing lead exposure and improving public health. Here are some key aspects of the initiative:

  1. Mandatory Reporting: The DOHMH has adopted amendments to the New York City Health Code to reduce the childhood blood lead level for mandatory reporting and investigation from 5.0 mcg/dL to 3.5 mcg/dL. This change aims to ensure that children with elevated blood lead levels are identified and taken into account for health services and education. It also aligns with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s current reference levels and reflects the city’s commitment to public safety.
